Clubs for Students

Students in the upper grades have a number of organizations to choose from to participate in during and after school. The after school activities due require that a student be furnished with a way home provided by the parents/guardian.

Book Club

The Cypress Springs Book Club meets once a month after school. The meetings are one-hour long and entail eating a yummy snack, discussing a wonderful book, and working on an activity related to the book. It is open to fourth and fifth grade students.

The Book Club books alternate monthly between one of the current Sunshine State Young Reader’s Award (SSYRA) selections and a “good read” chosen by Media Specialist Ms. Milliron. Activities have included arts and crafts projects, playing Jeopardy with clues from the book for that month, making “campfires” out of snack food, and playing a board game based on the book that was read.

The first two selections are:

October 3: The Terrible Two by Mac Barnett. (SSYRA)

November 7: The World According to Humphrey by Betty Birney

K-Kids

Cypress Springs Elementary has an after school community service club called K-Kids. This club is sponsored by Kiwanis and is very active in organizing community service activities for the students at the school to participate in.

Each classroom in grades 3 – 5 selects two students to serve as classroom representatives at K-Kids. Fifth graders who were K-Kid in grades 3 or 4 are also invited to come back and be representatives again. The K-Kids come to meetings and then return to their classroom and to a buddy classroom in the lower grades to share all activities that are going on.

Some of our activities include: collecting canned foods for the food bank, collecting Toys for Tots, participating in the Pasta for Pennies program and working with PTA to complete campus clean ups.

Faculty sponsors for K-Kids are Mrs. Mondul, Mrs. Maier, and Mrs. Justice.

Art Club

The mission of the Art Club is to provide an environment in which students can develop and expand their knowledge of awareness of the Visual Arts and therefore express their creative potential in varied artistic forms and models through possible endless expressions of universal artistic ways. It will encourage the collective and mutual connection between their creations and the world.

In addition, the Art Club will be used as an alternative vehicle to use and emphasize the Elements and Principles of Design and to encourage the use of craftsmanship in their creations.

The Art Club meets once a week. Members explore various techniques and use an assortment of mediums that they may or may not experience in the regular art class.

The Art Club is open to 4th and 5th grade students every Monday after school from 3:00 - 3:45 p.m. and their projects will be exhibited in school student Art Gallery.
